Parent Information
One of our major classroom goals is responsibility.
A grade 5 student statement would be... “I am learning to take responsibility for myself.”
A grade 6 student statement would be… “I am responsible for myself.”
Grade 6 prepares students for the independence and challenge of junior high school. Being responsible means learning proper study habits, using a planner daily, remembering to do homework, remembering to bring permission slips back to school, accepting consequences for one’s behaviour, working cooperatively and productively in a group, learning to work independently, and using class time effectively.
It is important that both the school and home work together to help the students achieve their goals. For communication each student has a planner and a duo tang called the Responsibility Record. These tools provide both, you the parents, and myself as the teacher, with important information. Also our class website will list important information as well.
The classroom management focuses on The “Positive Attitude Counts” program. This will be based upon student’s playground behaviour, and the following classroom expectations:
1. Be honest.
2. Be productive by working hard, participating, and being ready.
3. Be a good listener.
4. Be cooperative and respectful of others (a good team player).
5. Ask for help when needed.
6. Always try your best!
Students will earn tokens individual and points as a class room. This way they earn individual as well as team rewards.
Homework is given when a student does not finish the assignment in the allotted class time. Often in math there will be homework that is given that the student would not have had time to finish in class. This may happen in other subjects as well. The curriculum in math is very demanding and many skills are needed to be covered in a short period of time, therefore homework is often necessary. When a big project or test is upcoming you will be notified about the requirements and time lines in advance.
If for any reason your child could not complete their homework please write a note in the planner. Sometimes due to other circumstances it just could not be done that night. Any work sent home will have been explained in class and students will usually have had the opportunity to ask questions and get help if needed. You can view your child’s homework on our school website behind the Ms. Bergen’s class, under the topic September’s Homework.
